What is the BEST social media platform for dancers to use in 2024? With so many different social media platforms and new ones popping up all the time, it can feel really overwhelming trying to figure out where you should put your energy to actually help you in your career!
So where should you be? Surprise surprise, it depends! In this post, we'll talk through some simple questions that will help clarify what social media platforms fit YOU the best for YOUR goals. Whether you're a dancer, choreographer, or dance teacher, understanding where to focus your social media efforts is crucial.
#1 Do You Have a Website?
Before diving into social media, I recommend having a website. This serves as your digital home base, providing control over your content and audience. Social media algorithms change, platforms may disappear, and engagement levels can fluctuate. A website offers stability and a centralized location for your portfolio, contact information, and updates.
There are lots of platforms to help you create a simple website for cheap or free! Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, or Hostinger are all great options.
#2 What is Your Goal with Social Media?
Understanding your primary goal with social media is really important. If you don't know the destination, how are you going to know how to get there? Are you looking to attract more clients, secure gigs, promote your choreography, or simply share your journey with friends and fans? Each objective requires a different approach:
Getting More Clients: Platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn can showcase your professional skills and achievements.
Securing Gigs: TikTok’s engagement algorithm might help you get noticed by casting directors.
Promoting Choreography: YouTube and Instagram are excellent for sharing visual content and tutorials.
Here are some platform specific insights thanks to my friend ChatGPT!
Audience: Broad demographic reach.
Content Types: Text, images, videos, live streams, stories.
Best For: Brand awareness, community building, and advertising.
Audience: Younger demographic, highly visual.
Content Types: Images, stories, reels, IGTV.
Best For: Visual branding, influencer collaborations, and product showcases.
X (Twitter)
Audience: Broad but more focused on news and real-time updates.
Content Types: Short text, images, polls, videos.
Best For: Real-time engagement, customer service, and news updates.
Audience: Professionals, B2B market.
Content Types: Articles, job postings, professional updates, images, videos.
Best For: Networking, lead generation, and B2B marketing.
YouTube
Audience: Wide demographic reach.
Content Types: Videos, live streams.
Best For: Educational content, tutorials, and vlogs.
TikTok
Audience: Younger demographic, creative content.
Content Types: Short videos, trends.
Best For: Viral content, brand personality, and creative campaigns
#3 Who Are You Trying to Reach?
Your target audience will significantly influence your platform choice. Different demographics dominate different social media networks. When I asked ChatGPT to pull up studies around what demographics are most prominent on which platforms, it said:
TikTok: Popular among younger audiences (18-29), ideal for viral content.
Instagram: Attracts both young adults and middle-aged users, making it versatile for connecting with students and parents.
Facebook: Preferred by adults aged 30-64, useful for reaching a more mature audience.
LinkedIn: Targets professionals (30-64), great for networking and finding job opportunities.
YouTube: Universal appeal, excellent for long-form content like dance tutorials and performances.
Now I'll add my personal anecdote to this and point out that the studies only mentioned 18+, but platforms like TikTok and Snapchat are very popular with highschool and younger as well.
#4 What Platforms Do You Naturally Gravitate Towards?
Leverage platforms you already enjoy and feel comfortable using. If you’re active on Instagram and YouTube, start there. Familiarity with a platform reduces the learning curve and helps you produce content more efficiently.
#5 What is Your Capacity?
Be realistic about how much time and effort you can dedicate to social media. It’s better to excel on one or two platforms than to spread yourself too thin across many. Focus on doing a great job on the platforms you choose before considering expansion. Remember, quality over quantity.
Conclusion
Choosing the right social media platform involves understanding your goals, knowing your audience, and assessing your capacity. Start with a solid foundation, like a personal website, and build your social media presence on platforms that align with your objectives and interests.
