How to Optimize Your Instagram Profile for Success: A Guide for Dancers
This week we’re diving into something that we all have but may not want…an Instagram account 👀. I get it, social media can feel icky and manipulative. In my most recent survey that I sent out to my audience, someone described it as a “necessary evil.”
However we feel about it, as artists, we know how crucial it is to have a strong online presence, especially on platforms like Instagram. A clear profile can be a powerful tool for dancers to showcase their talents and connect with industry professionals. And I do believe that there is a way to use social media that is healthy, positive, and doesn’t take too much time out of your busy schedule.
This week, we’re diving into optimizing your Instagram profile to ensure it stands out and accurately reflects your talents. Here are five simple tips (plus a bonus at the end) to help you make your profile stand out and reflect your artistry effectively. And the best part is, these tips are super simple!
#1 Simplify Your Handle
Your Instagram handle should be straightforward and preferably just your name. This makes it easy for people to find you when they hear about you through word of mouth. Avoid using quirky or unrelated usernames like “ILove2Dance999.” If your name is taken, consider adding a simple number or abbreviation to keep it professional and easy to search.
#2 Choose the Right Profile Picture
Your profile picture is crucial as it appears next to every comment and message you send. Make it a clear, high-quality headshot. If you don’t have a professional headshot, a well-lit selfie can work temporarily. Avoid using dance silhouettes or action shots where your face isn’t clearly visible. The goal is for people to recognize and connect with you instantly.
#3 Write a Simple Bio
Your bio should quickly convey who you are and what you do. Include keywords like your location, dance style, and notable achievements. Avoid filling your bio with personal likes or unrelated hobbies. Instead, focus on keywords that industry professionals might search for. For instance, “Based in Maryland, Hip Hop Teacher, Choreographer," etc.
#4 Utilize Your Links Effectively
Instagram now allows multiple links in your bio, so take advantage of this feature. Direct your followers to your website, dance reel, or any other relevant content that showcases your work. Consider linking directly to a bio page or dance reel on your website rather than the homepage to give visitors immediate access to your best content.
#5 Start Your Grid with a Strong First Impression
Your Instagram grid should kick off with a pinned post that features a clear and professional headshot. This post serves as your digital resume’s front page, allowing visitors to see your face immediately. Just like in an audition, where your resume and headshot are presented together, your pinned post should give a snapshot of who you are. This visual cue helps casting directors and choreographers remember you.
Aside from your headshot, consider pinning a second post featuring your dance reel and another highlighting a significant career moment. This ensures that the top of your grid is always showcasing your best work and making a strong impression.
BONUS #6 Fill Your Grid with Quality Content
Aim to have at least nine posts to fill your grid, creating a complete and professional look. Mix up your content to include not just dance videos but also snapshots of your life, hobbies, and achievements. A good balance could be around 70-80% dance-related content and 20-30% personal or lifestyle posts. This variety helps people get a sense of who you are as a person and an artist.
